Thomas Gontar studied Blacksmithing and Metalsmithing for three years at Plumpton College, completing his studies with a triple distinction and the award for top overall student.

Upon leaving Plumpton, he moved to Somerset to work for Alex Pole Ironwork. Experience with a commercial blacksmith enabled him to hone his skills and knowledge of a working forge environment. Following this, Tom worked alongside successful sculptural blacksmith Andy Hopper. Andy introduced him to an artistic and architectural style of blacksmithing. During his time with Andy, Tom assisted in the making of sculptural works that have since been shown in exhibitions across the UK.

When Glynde Forge became available, he applied for the vacancy and, seeing off strong competition for the premises, moved in in May 2016.

Thomas employs time honoured techniques to produce high quality work that showcases the best of traditional craftsmanship and his own contemporary aesthetic.
